What would it take for you to sing in the dark — not when things got better, but right in the middle of the worst of it?
Today's Scripture: "But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them. Suddenly there was a great earthquake, so that the foundations of the prison were shaken; and immediately all the doors were opened and everyone's chains were loosed." — Acts 16:25–26
Reflection: Let's not rush past what had happened to Paul and Silas before this moment. They had been stripped, beaten with rods, and thrown into the innermost cell of the prison — the most isolated, most secure place available. Their feet were in stocks. By any measure, things had gone terribly wrong.
And at midnight — not at sunrise, not when the situation improved — they were praying and singing.
They didn't worship because the chains came off. The chains came off because they worshiped. They knew something about God that their circumstances couldn't change, and they chose to declare it out loud in the darkness.
Here's what makes this story even more remarkable: the jailer who witnessed it all — a hardened man on the edge of taking his own life — fell trembling before Paul and Silas and asked, "What must I do to be saved?" Their midnight worship didn't just sustain them. It opened a door for someone else entirely.
Your faithfulness in a hard season may be doing the same thing right now — preparing a door you can't yet see, for someone who doesn't yet know they need Jesus.
Today's Application: Today, choose one act of worship in a difficult area of your life — a prayer of gratitude, a song on your commute, a written declaration of what you know to be true about God even when you can't feel it. Worship before the chains come off.
A Closing Thought: Your midnight worship is never wasted. God is always doing something bigger than just getting you out of your current situation — he's working for the person on the other side of your faithfulness.
